Originally developed for Pan Am pilots in need of a dual-time tool watch in the 1950s, reference 6542 marked the beginning of the now acclaimed GMT-Master family. Introduced in 1959, reference 1675 built on the success of the outgoing reference adding design and material improvements, and has since become a legend in its own right. Technical improvements were made on the basic blueprint of a rotating 24 hour bezel and hand, such as an aluminium bezel for durability and crown guards to increase robustness.
The present watch has several characteristics which make it stand out from the archetypal 1675. Perhaps the most noticeable of which is the Fuchsia bezel, which is a natural result of aging where the original “Pepsi” red sector of the bezel fades into a beautiful magenta. On top of that, this watch also contains the desirable “Radial” seconds track and all-red GMT hand. Each of these features is desirable, as they increase the rarity and collectability of watches possessing them, but is a true treasure to behold if found all together on one watch. The present lot is indeed a marvel of 1675 collecting, and complete with punched Rolex certificate, is sure to attract discerning collectors.
