Towards the end of the 1960s, Rolex would move away from using gilt glossy dials for the reference 1016, instead introduced black matte dials which are also loved by collectors. To the best of our knowledge, the present example belongs to the Mark 1 matte dial and features so called "fat lumes", for the rather larger size on 3, 6 and 9 indexes. Its case back is inscribed with a personal message as well, further enhancing its charm.
