Patek Philippe has one of the most prestigious chronograph legacies in the industry, and in 2019, they continued this tradition with the release of the reference 5172. This model follows a long lineage of serially produced chronograph wristwatches. Between 1967 and 1998, Patek didn't offer a simple hand-wound chronograph wristwatch, with the last being the reference 1463. However, they made a bold return in 1998 with the introduction of the larger, 42mm Lemania-based reference 5070, which stayed in production for a decade. Its successor, the reference 5170, eventually gave way to the current 5172.
While the 5172 maintains the classic double sub-dial layout and peripheral scale, it brings a fresh aesthetic with modern Arabic numerals and syringe hands. Yet, its vintage-inspired elements, like the stepped lugs and rounded crown, anchor it in Patek's rich heritage. With a 41mm white gold case, the 5172 offers a refined yet substantial wrist presence, blending classic charm with contemporary style.
