Robust oak, textural parchment, and patinated bronze coalesce into an exemplary model of contemporary design in Ingrid Donat’s 2005 Console. Fusing sculptural forms with functional design, Donat’s distinct, eclectic style is on display in this skillful demonstration of her craftsmanship.

Illustrating the artist’s precise and exacting technique, the console features parchment-covered oak drawers and shelves set within a bronze frame. Contrasting the smooth parchment finish, bronze legs elegantly traverse the length of the piece and culminate at the very top, where they are brought to life by four sculpted heads. Donat's meticulous bronze metalwork, juxtaposed with the cool parchment, infuses the piece with warmth and vitality, particularly evident in the intricate detailing of the grooved bronze heads, reminiscent of works by master metalworkers Alberto and Diego Giacometti. In fact, it was Diego Giacometti himself – a long-time friend of Donat’s – who first encouraged her to begin designing her own furniture in the 1980s, having witnessed her dissatisfaction with the commercial market’s offerings. Donat’s designs have become synonymous with skill, quality, and artistic vision.

Blending organic forms with geometric precision, the present console blurs the line between form and function and embodies Donat's objective of creating not merely a piece of furniture, but a functional work of art. For her, "it is essential that everything be art." Commanding space with grace, sophistication, and a palpable presence, this console thereby transcends its utilitarian function to become a bold statement of refined taste and artistic discernment.
