The present waterpot is remarkable for its masterful rendering of lively chilong twisting their bodies around the opening of the vessel in pursuit of the flaming pearl. Clambering on, the beasts' scaly and muscular bodies create a dramatic contrast to the otherwise undecorated vessel.

See a jade bowl, similarly carved with chilong to the sides, in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (accession no. B60J456), illustrated in Later Chinese Jades: Ming Dynasty to Early Twentieth Century, San Francisco, 2007, pl. 183; and a similar oval waterpot sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30th October 1994, lot 460.
