The present bowl is striking for its luminous glaze and boldly carved floral designs. Decorated with lotus blossoms borne on meandering scrolls to the exterior and interior, the bowl is further decorated with a chrysanthemum flowerhead to the center of the inside. Already renowned for their jade-like glaze during the Song dynasty, the Longquan kilns during the Yuan and Ming dynasties continued to produce ceramics for the court, catering to the contemporary aesthetic that was highly influenced by the blue and white porcelains coming from the neighboring Jingdezhen kilns.
