This Planetarium Copernicus, reference 801-22, is a remarkable timepiece that pays homage to the work of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.
In addition to its timekeeping function, the dial is segmented in several concentric dials that rotate, representing both Ptolemy's Earth-centric universe and Copernicus' helio-centric universe.
While Copernicus' model was more accurate, both interpretations influenced the scale of the universe. The watch displays the positions of the seven ancient planets—Earth, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter.
The Sun is positioned in the center of the dial, with the planets arranged around it on the concentric disc, each labeled accordingly. This design allows the observation of planetary movement in Copernicus' universe and enables calculations based on Ptolemy's model. The Earth's position indicates the month and zodiac period, while its rotation axis showcases the lunar orbit.
Despite its numerous features, the watch remains very legible. This model is part of Ulysse Nardin's celestial-themed series of watches, reflecting the brand's mastery in combining horology with astronomical inspiration.
