The legendary reference 570 offers a larger diameter than the traditional reference 96.
A rather oversized watch, it has been nicknamed "Calatravone" (Italian for large Calatrava), its timeless design with large flat bezel and thick lugs made it a staple within the Patek Phillipe catalogue from 1938 till its discontinuation in 1972. The reference 570 was cased mostly in yellow gold and rarely in pink gold, like the present lot, white gold, stainless steel and platinum, featuring a multitude of dial variations.
The reference can be found with center seconds or subsidiary seconds, like the present watch. The case was made by Antoine Gerlach, which is identified by the "4" stamped inside the case back.
The present pink gold example, made around 1946, is part of the first production period and is fitted with the correct long hard enamel Patek Philippe & Co signature.
It is one of the very few that is still accompanied by its certificate of origin, indicating a date of sale in 1949, making it a true collector's gem.
