The Rolex Day-date stands as one of the brand’s most luxurious wristwatches.
The iconic model was originally released in 1956 as the first waterproof and chronometer-certified automatic wristwatch to display the date at 3 o’clock and the day of the week in full letters at 12 o'clock. Considered as an everyday dress watch and worn by the most influential men and women of the century, the Day-date was only available in precious metals, including yellow, rose and white gold as well as platinum.
Among the different generations of Day Date, the 180X is the most famous iteration.
Produced between the early 1960's to 1977, it is THE generation when it comes to this model.
The present example features the unusual bark finish both on the bezel and president bracelet.
That livery was named 1807 by Rolex and is highly collectible as it increases the charisma and vintage feel of the legendary model.
This 1807 in particular is incredibly collectible for two additional reasons.
Firstly, it was personalized for the Sultanate of Oman. Indeed, the watch features the Khanjar crest at 6 o'clock.
At the time, these special watches were commissioned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said after his education at the military academy, Sandhurst, when the young Qaboos had, through a mutual friend met John Asprey, heir to the jeweler, watch dealer and silversmith. It was with Asprey’s help he was able to negotiate these commissions with Rolex.
These watches were usually gifted to visiting dignitaries and friends of the State.
The present lot comes accompanied by its original guarantee that is both stamped Asprey and punched with it serial number. The watch also comes with its original Rolex presentation case that was on the external part personalized with the Khanjar crest and on the inside adorned with a piece of leather confirming the relationship between H. M. Qaboos Bin Said and the famous London retailer.
Additionally, the watch has been preserved in outstanding condition, having past most of its life protected in its presentation case.
This piece is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a timepiece gathering all the criterias for the demanding collectors.
