In the late 1980s, Ulysse Nardin introduced its San Marco automaton models as a homage to late 17th-century watchmaking. These watches marry striking design with intricate automaton features, showcasing dials adorned with jacquemarts, a pinnacle of craftsmanship.
Renowned watchmaker Christophe Claret was enlisted by the firm to develop the movements, marking the beginning of Ulysse Nardin's legacy in crafting complex automated wristwatches. Crafted in yellow gold, the jacquemart positioned over the dial elegantly strikes the bell upon activation of the mechanism or the passing of hours. This meticulous recreation pays homage to the jacquemarts originally designed by Paolo Savin and cast in bronze by Ambrogio dell'Anchore in 1497, gracing the clock tower overlooking Venice's iconic San Marco Square.
