The Rolex Submariner was introduced in 1954 as a robust, highly water-resistant diver’s wristwatch.
Its timeless design barely evolved over the course of 60 years, contributing to the legendary status of this model.
The reference 16610 was produced for more than 20 years between 1987 and 2010 and introduced major technical innovations. It replaced the outgoing Submariner reference 16800 and is considered by many collectors as the last “pre-modern” iteration, before Rolex introduced the maxi cases and the ceramic bezel insert with ref. 116610.
The reference embodies the technical evolutions of that period as it introduced progressive changes over its long production period, such as the transition from Tritium to Luminova luminescent material in the late 1990s, the withdrawal of drilled lugs and the introduction of the Rolex engraving to the dial outer ring.
This reference is powered by the caliber 3135 which remained in use for the following reference 116610.
This early example is fitted with its correct tritium dial and its case has retained strong proportions, making it an excellent addition to any collection.
