The 6239 was introduced in 1963 in the United States and started the history of the most celebrated chronograph in the world.
The reference was the first to have the ‘Cosmograph’ dial designation and was produced with several dial configurations. The Tachymeter scale, used for measuring distance over time, which was previously printed on the dial of the 6238 was moved to an enlarged bezel and providing an increased dial plate for more varied and intricate details. Furthermore, with this model, Rolex introduced the inverted colors for the chronograph subsidiary dials. Primarily invented to increase the readability, this contrast between the main and sub dials elevated the charisma of the piece and had a significant influence on the appearance of many chronograph watches produced after the 1963.
The most striking element of this lot is its Paul Newman dial, so named after he was said to have worn one in the 1969 while promoting the film, 'Winning'.
The very nicely preserved three-colour black dial is perfectly complemented by the white outer track with red graduation echoed by the red Daytona signature above the subsidiary dial at 6 o'clock. In very good and attractive condition, the dial is vibrant and catches the light very nicely, giving the piece a strong and elegant presence on the wrist.
This lot is fitted with a bezel graduated to 200 units, a 722-1 movement and a 7835 riveted bracelet. These three elements are characteristic of the latest upgrade on the 6239 before it was replaced at the end of the decade.
Presented on behalf of an important private individual, this original model of the Daytona, fitted with a stunning and legendary Paul Newman dial would be a significant addition to any distinguished collection.
