A perfect representation of a timeless watch, the Calatrava is a design which has been crowned by many collectors as the blueprint for the ultimate dress watch. With a minimalist design that allows timekeeping down to its purest essence, the Calatrava had become the icon of Patek Philippe since 1932.
The present reference 3802 features a Clous de Paris finishing on the bezel – so called hobnail bezel. It is a distinctive stylistic signature of Patek Philippe. With this decoration, the Manufacture managed to elevate the sophistication of some of its designs without compromising with their pure lines. The Clous de Paris first appeared in 1934 on a Reference 96. While this decoration is often linked to the 3919 that was introduced in 1985, the 3802 was launched before, in 1983. The reference became 3802-100 in 1986 until 1990 before being replaced by the 3802-200, such as the present lot which has the date corrector change.
The two-piece case of the 3802 was made by Favre-Perret with the casemaker hammer number 115.
This piece has a dial with the Roman numerals on a white lacquered background described by Patek Philippe as 'porcelaine', which is a reference to the tone and not the material.
The Reference 3802 was finally discontinued in 2006 and its longevity testifies the great quality and appeal of this neovintage automatic Calatrava with date.
