8vo. Engraved frontispiece, engraved title, engraved in-text illustrations after Birket Foster. Publisher's red fine diaper cloth, blocked in gilt, spine gilt; spine sunned, text block slightly cocked, extremities a little rubbed, very light soiling to covers. Collector's red cloth clamshell box; spine sunned.
The first edition of Gaskell's novella, her second published work.
Published as a Christmas book in December, 1850, the titular character and themes have parallels to those of Eliot's The Mill on the Floss.
