Thomas Baldwin. Narrative of the Massacre, by the Savages, of the Wife and Children of Thomas Baldwin, who, since the Melancholy Period of the Destruction of his Unfortunate Family, has dwelt entirely alone, in a hut of his own construction, secluded from human society, in the extreme western part of the State of Kentucky. New York: Martin & Wood, 1835. 8vo (240 x 150 mm, uncut). Folding woodcut frontispiece of "Massacre of Baldwin's Family," partially handcolored and with letterpress key at bottom, woodcut vignette portrait of Baldwin on title-page; browned, horizontal tears at inner margins into text (not affecting legibility), margins frayed. Stab-sewn in original salmon wrappers; stained, frayed, chipped. First edition. Likely sensationalist fiction, although Howes states the Narrative is "[p]erhaps based on some actual incident of border horror in early Kentucky." (Ayer 18; Howes B63; Sabin 2922)
