Brendan Dawes is a UK based artist using generative processes involving data, machine learning and algorithms, to create interactive installations, electronic objects, online experiences, data visualizations, motion graphics and imagery for screen and print. Time and space are often consistent themes within his work. A Lumen Prize Alumni, his work has featured in many exhibitions across the world including Big Bang Data in thirteen cities, three MoMA shows in New York together with his Cinema Redux work becoming part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art in 2008.
In 2023, at the Venice Biennale Musica, Dawes collaborated with documentary filmmaker Gary Hustwit to present “Nothing Can Ever Be The Same”, an infinite generative film inspired by the archive of Brian Eno. This work then went on to inform the generative documentary film Eno, which was first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024 – a film which is never the same twice.
From Dawes' In Harmony - The Five Boroughs series. Using population density data for the New York borough of Brooklyn, a digital sculpture is formed – an abstract totem of the ebb and flow of a busy population. The central form is created from a proprietary algorithm which transforms alphanumeric strings of data – in this instance "Brooklyn" – into a unique three dimensional shape in which the populous, represented by data-born strands and coloured by the images of Brooklyn's tree-lined neighbourhoods, move in, around and through this code born form.
Collectors are eligible to receive a full-resolution (4K 60fps) file directly from the artist along with a 650 mm x 365 mm signed giclée print. Each print includes a Verisart NFC/QR tag linking to a certificate of authenticity. Print is 650 mm x 365 mm @300dpi on Photo Rag Bright White Matt fine art paper, 310gsm, 100% cotton.
