André Arbus

The Planier lighthouse is located on the island of Planier off Marseille's coast. Bombed by the German army in 1944, it was rebuilt by architects André Arbus and André Crillon from 1947 to 1959. The new lighthouse, with its tower and annexe buildings, was designed as a monumental ensemble in cut-stone and concrete in a spectacular "neo-Visionary" style, but remained unfinished due to the high cost of the work. Arbus was also commissioned to design the lighthouse furniture for the keepers and their families. The 66-metres high tower is the twelfth tallest traditional lighthouse in the world.

Le phare de Planier est situé sur l'île de Planier au large de Marseille. Détruit en 1944 par l'armée allemande, sa reconstruction sera confiée aux architectes André Arbus et André Crillon et menée de 1947 à 1959. Le nouveau phare avec sa tour et ses bâtiments annexes a été pensé comme un ensemble monumental en pierre de taille et béton dans un style "néo-visionnaire" spectaculaire mais est resté inachevé en raison du coût élevé du chantier. Arbus fut aussi chargé de dessiner le mobilier du phare destiné aux gardiens et à leurs familles. L'édifice, de 66 mètres de hauteur, est le douzième phare traditionnel le plus haut du monde.
