Émile Gallé was introduced to Sarah Bernhardt by the Comte de Montesquiou at the party given in her honor on December 9, 1896 in Paris.
Sarah Bernhardt inspired many Symbolist artists during this period. Émile Gallé created several works in her honor.
A same model of vase was presented by Émile Gallé at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris in the Repos dans la solitude showcase.
