Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, sold

The Truly Magnificent Collection of Ancient and Modern Silver, Silver Gilt and Gold Plate of His Late Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, Christie & Manson, 27 June 1843, lot 583

by repute, acquired by the great-grandfather of the present owner

Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (1773 –1843), was the sixth son of George III. He was known for his liberal political views, somewhat estranging himself from his brother, George IV. He supported the abolition of the slave trade, Catholic emancipation and the removal of civil restrictions on Jews and dissenters. His will left instructions that he not be buried with other members of the Royal Family at Windsor, but at the public cemetery in Kensal Green, in north-west London.

The Prince amassed an impressive collection of both English and Continental silver resulting in 695 lots and almost 40,000oz, sold at auction over four days, after his death in 1843. The sale totalled £20,752 (The Era, 23 July 1843), approximately £2,000,000 today.

The current lot is described in the 1843 catalogue as : ‘A two handled cup and cover, with a sportsman and shepherdess on either side and scroll border, lions masks on the foot and animals on the lid’.
