Lot Details

Description

The faceted glass body with faint purple tinge, the similarly faceted silver-gilt mounts with leaf thumb-piece and later English crest.

12.5cm., 4¾in high

Sotheby's, London, 23 May 1985, lot 97

Christie's, London, 14 July 1993, lot 97

The design of this tankard can be compared to faceted serpentine and Böttger pieces produced in Germany in the beginning of the 18th century.

Three silver chocolate pots with similar facetted decoration have been noted, all marked for Pezé Pilleau, London 1730-1731 (for one example see Sotheby's, London, 25 February 1954, lot 77).
