Description
Circular, on three lion paw castors, the sides chased with roses and thistles, the cover set with a William IV coronation medal and engraved with the Royal Arms, a crown and two naval scenes, and engraved on the inside with a presentation inscription, the interior with six hinged compartments centered by a further compartment with pierced grille.

The presentation inscription inside the cover reads: 'The gift of Lady Grant to John Irving Glennie in memory of Rear Admiral Sir Richard Grant, obt. 3rd March 1859 at. 75'.
Sir Richard Grant (1783-1859) was born in Kingston, Jamaica, the son of Richard Grant, and entered the Royal Navy in 1798. He served in the East and West Indies, the Mediterranean, Baltic and North American stations and commanded the Tyne, Castor and Victory amongst other ships. He was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1855. He lived for the last years of his life at Adelaide Crescent, Brighton, with his wife Lady Lydia Grant.
John Irving Glennie (1796-1861) was a partner in the law firm Sladen, Glennie & Farquhar
