A pair of gilt and patinated bronze five-light candelabra ‘aux égyptiennes’, possibly England, first quarter of 19th century | Paire de candélabres à cinq lumières aux égyptiennes en bronze patiné et doré, travail vraisemblablement anglais du premier quart du XIXe siècle

This pair of candelabra is directly inspired by the first ‘Return from Egypt’ models produced in Paris at the very end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century and distributed in England by Martin-Eloi Lignereux. Reminiscences of Thomas Hope's work can also be seen, as well as a particular treatment of the gilt-bronze that can be compared to that of the bronze maker Vuilliamy, in particular with the stylized lion's head light arms, which would tend to favour an English origin.

Cette paire de candélabres est directement inspirée des premiers modèles « Retour d’Egypte » réalisés à Paris à la toute fin du XVIIIe siècle et au début du XIXe siècle diffusés en Angleterre par Martin-Eloi Lignereux. On peut y voir aussi des réminiscences de l’œuvre de Thomas Hope ainsi qu’un traitement particulier du bronze doré qu’il convient de rapprocher de celui du bronzier Vuilliamy avec notamment des bras de lumière à tête de lion stylisée, ce qui tendrait à privilégier une origine anglaise.
