The present figure likely depicts Virudhaka (Zengzhang tianwang in Chinese), one of the Four Heavenly Kings in Buddhist cosmology, who is revered as the guardian of the south. Known for his formidable presence and often depicted with a sword, Virudhaka symbolizes the protection and growth of the dharma in the southern quarter of the world. His role extends beyond mere guardianship; he is seen as a protector of the spiritual realm, ensuring the stability and prosperity of the Buddhist faith. His fierce appearance and vigilant posture serve as a reminder of the unwavering defense against evil and the promotion of righteousness and virtue within the Buddhist teachings. Fahua figures of this size and quality rarely appear at auction. Compare a large fahua figure of a Daoist deity from the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan, sold in our London rooms, 1st November 2022, lot 42; and another figure of Buddha, sold in the same rooms, 12th July 2006, lot 111.
