In 1918 C. B. Cochran commissioned Dulac to design a proposed musical version of Edmond Rostand's play Cyrano de Bergerac, with Robert Loraine in the title role. The play was performed in 1919 at the Theatre Royal, and in 1927 at the Apollo Theatre, in London. Dulac's costume design was influenced by the work of Léon Bakst, whose work he had admired since seeing the Diaghilev's ballet, Cleopatra.
