This volume formed part of the Dávila y Toledo library, with its distinctive fore-edge decoration. For more information on this substantial library, see lot 1044 (Budé). Along with lots 1044, 1127 (Isocrates), 1188 (de Deutz), 1208 (Tacitus), and 1229 (Vegetius), this volume belonged to Gómez Dávila y Toledo.
8vo (144 x 90 mm). Roman type, 21 lines plus headline. collation: π8 A-Z8 2A-2F8 2G4: 244 leaves (2G4 blank, H4 missigned as G4). Woodcut initials, signed by author at end of preface, early manuscript annotations (some shaved at fore-edge), early manuscript list of books with prices on lower endleaf. (Marginal dampstaining, small tear without loss to foot of B6.)
binding: Spanish brown morocco over pasteboards (148 x 103 mm), late sixteenth century, tooled in blind, rectangular frame within three broad rules, roll tool containing woman's head in hatched roundel and animals running through foliage, gilt 10-point star in outer corners, in centre a circle composed of gilt flower tool and 6 gilt semicircles, spine with 4 full bands, gilt 10-point star in compartments, late sixteenth-century fore-edge decoration, title lettered across fore-edge with armorials and leafy decoration, head- and tail-edges stained blue. (Binding slightly rubbed and worn, spine and joints repaired, binding heavily restored at edges.)
