A contemporary binding on a volume of medical texts, made for a physician. Thriveris (1504-1554) was a Belgian physician who studied and taught at Louvain, writing numerous commentaries on Greek and Latin medical texts.
3 works in one volume, 16mo (120 x 77 mm). Roman and italic type, 29 lines plus headline. collation: (1) a-z A-B8: 200 leaves. Woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut initials. (2) AA-BB8: 16 leaves. Woodcut printer's device on title-page and final verso (otherwise blank), woodcut initials. (3) a-z A-G8: 240 leaves (G6 blank). Woodcut printer's device on title-page and final verso (otherwise blank), woodcut initials. (Occasional light staining or foxing.)
binding: Contemporary Roman brown morocco tooled in gilt and blind (125 x 89 mm), by Marcantonio Guillery, title lettered in centre of upper cover G DE TEMP ET DE INAE IN TEMPERA with gilt corner fleurons, owner's name IO ALBERTO PHISI stamped in gilt at head (plausibly a later alteration from the original name), blind-tooled border of a round arabesque stamp with fleurs-de-lys at corners and along two inner sides of the frame, lower cover with gilt lettering ΤΕΧΝΗ, spine with blind ruling in compartments, red and blue speckled edges, stubs from two pairs of ties. In modern black morocco-backed drop-backed box by James Brockman. (Binding slightly rubbed with repairs to extremities, ends of spine and joints, front flyleaf becoming loose.)
