A volume with the title in large manuscript letters along the edges, additionally with a branded monogram on the head edge.

8vo (160 x 110mm). Roman and italic types, 29 lines plus headline. collation: a-z8 A-M8: 280 leaves. Woodcut printer’s device at beginning and end, woodcut initials, early marginalia in Latin and Spanish, manuscript mottoes on flyleaf and verso of title. (Dampstaining.)


binding: Contemporary reversed sheep (163 x 115 mm), stubs from 2 pairs of yellow silk ties, plain edges, title lettered along all edges and with brand on head-edge. (Binding somewhat worn, stitched repair on upper cover, top panel of spine defective.)


provenance: Various early inscriptions and mottoes including “Difficilia quae pulchra” (things that are beautiful are hard to obtain) in a circle on flyleaf — crossed through inscription on title-page, "Hic liber pertinet conventus almanticensis ..." (i.e. Almanza, in Leon?) — monogram branded onto head edge, possibly of Mexican origin (but not found in Catálogo colectivo de marcas de fuego, online database). acquisition: Purchased in 2000 from G.W.
