Description

This binding was executed for Gian Federico Madruzzo (1531?-1586) and features his arms on the covers; for more information on his collection, see lot 1064. binding: Contemporary Paris (or Lyon) vellum armorial binding for G.F. Madruzzo, richly gilt, large corner pieces with raised interlaced strapwork, in centre a cartouche with Madruzzo's arms stamped in gilt and painted red, blue, and black, within collar of the Order of Santissima Annuziata, surrounded by a sémé of fleurs-de-lis, within a cartouche, large arabesque corner pieces, fore-edge flaps decorated by a roll of azured leaves and tendrils, traces of two pairs of ties, flat spine with 3 false bands formed by gilt fillets and decorated by a double row of fleur-de-lys and compartments gilt with azured leaves and tendrils, edges gilt and gauffered with a row of ovals at edges and 5 ovals in the form of a cross in centre, "Prudentius" in ink along tail-edge. (Three small areas of soiling to front cover.)
