OROSIUS, PAULUS. Pauli Orosii Presbyteri Hispani, viri. doctisimi, adversus paganos, historiarum libri septem. Nunc denuo cum manuscriptis exemplaribus aliquot collati, diligentiusque multo qua antehac unquam excusi, cum indice rerum in ipsis contentarum copiosissimo. Cologne: Jaspar von Gennep for Gottfried Hittorp, August 1542


A crisp copy of Orosius' work on the sufferings of mankind, bound in a contemporary Parisian binding for Marcus Fugger, complete with the manuscript Fugger shelfmark on the front free endpaper. For other volumes bound for Marcus Fugger, see lots 1058, 1092, 1190, 1195 and 1209.

8vo (161 x 98 mm). Roman type, 27 lines plus headline. collation: A-B8 a-z8 2a-2i8 kk4: 276 leaves. Title-page with ornamental woodcut border, woodcut initials.


binding: Parisian brown calf (168 x 108 mm.), ca 1550, 2 concentric rectangles formed by broad blind line, gilt fleurons at outer corners of inner frame, in centre gilt ornament composed of bud and leaf over anvil tool with leafy tool at sides,spine with 5 full and 2 half bands, traces of 2 paper labels, title ("•PAUL•OROSI•") in large majuscules running up fore-edge. (Spine damaged.)
