Bound in a contemporary Roman binding by Niccolò Franzese (active 1526 to ca 1570), "the most successful Roman binder of the mid-sixteenth century" (Hobson), appointed as the first binder to the Vatican Library, and best known for his work for the Grimaldi library (see lot 1047).
3 works in one volume, 8vo (160 x 106 mm). Italic type, 31 lines plus headline. collation: a-x8 y4; a-m8; A-L8: 172 + 96 + 88 leaves. Title-page to each work with woodcut device, first and second works with woodcut device to verso of final leaf, woodcut initials. (Slight marginal worming to first and final gatherings, not affecting text.)
binding: Roman binding by Niccolò Franzese (164 x 116 mm), ca 1545, red morocco, richly gold tooled, frame formed by 2 pairs of gilt fillets with interlacing exedrae containing large and small leafy tools, enameled black between each pair of gilt fillets and within exedrae, central panel filled with large solid leafy tools, spine with 3 full and 4 half bands, formed by 2 gilt fillets containing leaves and tendrils, traces of 2 pairs of ties, edges gilt and gauffered. (Spine with some worming and restoration at head and tail.)
