Another set of homilies and biblical commentaries by John Chrysostom, also in a Bolognese binding although the book was printed in Paris. The text was based on the Steels edition (lot 1130).
The same borders and overall decoration can be seen in Hobson and Quaquarelli, Legature bolognesi del Rinascimento, items 37 and 38 (this copy mentioned on p.25); the central cartouche is also found on De Marinis 1317, and some of the other tools on De Marinis 1348 (made for Alessandro Farnese). It is quite possible that the binding was made for a German student in Bologna. The gilt centrepiece surrounded by a blind-tooled border was typical of Bolognese bindings of the time.
4 works in 2 volumes, 8vo (165 x 103 mm). Roman type, 39 lines plus headline. collation: (1) *8 B-Nn8: 288 leaves (small rusthole in R4); (2) aA-eE8: 40 leaves; (3) AA-KK8: 80 leaves (quire H becoming loose); (4) a-z8 A-N8: 288 leaves (small stain on p7; occasional light browning throughout.)
binding: Contemporary Bolognese chestnut morocco tooled in gilt and blind (169 x 115 mm), by the Pflug and Ebeleben Binder, covers with an arabesque border surrounded by smaller fleurons and bud stamps, all in blind, central gilt leafy cartouche with title lettered in gilt on upper covers, lower covers with the initials F A M G, spines with blind hatching and paper manuscript lettering-piece at head, dark speckled edges, stubs from four pairs of ties. (Bindings slightly rubbed, lettering-pieces defective, spines slightly faded, small area of loss to lower cover of second volume.)
provenance: "F A M G", initials on binding — Sotheby’s, 4 February 1980, lot 147, £800, to Quaritch — Lathrop C. Harper Inc., catalogue 237 (New York, 1981), item 30 — Christie’s, New York, 8 June 1990, lot 217 — Christie’s, London, 26 June 1996, lot 89. acquisition: Purchased at the preceding sale. references: USTC 199895, 149058, 199373, 199897
