Description
HOLKOT, ROBERT. Magistri Roberti holkot Super quattuor libros sententiarum questiones. Quedam conferentie. De imputabilitate peccati questio longa. Determinationes quarundam aliarum questionum. Tabule duplices omnium predictorum. (Lyon: Johannes Clein, 15 July 1505)
This is the only known pair of panel stamps by the bookseller and binder André Boule, who was active in Paris from ca 1499 to 1543. The presence of St Catherine of Siena and Thomas Aquinas indicate that the bindings were perhaps made for the Dominican brothers in the rue Saint-Jacques in Paris (Fabienne Le Bars, entry in reliures.bnf.fr). This volume, however, seems to have a later Franciscan provenance.
A very similar binding is shown in Goldschmidt, Gothic and Renaissance Bookbindings, item 56 (plate XXIV). Staffan Fogelmark has described the problem with the alignment of some panels on Boule's bindings; on this binding the upper cover panel leans slightly to the right (Flemish and related panel-stamped bindings, p.91).
4to (201 x 132 mm). Gothic type, double column, 53 lines plus headline. collation: π10 a-p8 q10 A-I8 K10: 222 leaves (K10 blank). Woodcut printer's device at end. (Some light damp-staining.)
binding: Contemporary Parisian panel-stamped calf by André Boule (207 x 150 mm), upper cover with a panel stamp of the martyrdom of St Sebastian, lower cover with a stamp of the Crucifixion with St Catherine of Siena and St Thomas Aquinas, each panel with the name ANDRI BOVLE at foot, each cover with a double frame of blind fillets with fleur-de-lys stamps at corners and along sides, plain edges, stubs from four pairs of ties. In modern morocco box with perspex sides. (Binding a little worn, rebacked retaining most of original spine, corners bumped and repaired.)
