This binding adheres to the contemporary Spanish style, betraying the strong influence of plateresque decorative arts. Often tooled in blind, the rectangular border and prevalence of medallions are characteristic of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Spain. A similar roll tool appears on a binding from Valladolid in 1637, for example (see Plate XIII in Penney, An Album of Selected Bookbindings, 1967). The binding has been attributed to the Sevillian Rose Binder 1.
2 works in one volume, 8vo (148 x 94 mm). Roman, Italic, and Greek type, 24 lines plus headline. collation: (1) πα⁴ b⁴ A-Z⁸ a⁸ α-θ⁸: 264 leaves (quires πα4 and b4 misbound; b4 blank; last leaf blank); (2) a-z8 &8: 192 leaves. Woodcut initials in both works, a few passages underlined in ink.
binding: Contemporary Spanish brown morocco over pasteboards (158 x 105 mm), tooled in black and blind, a frame containing a blind roll of a spread eagle, interlaced snakes with wings, heads in oval medallions and leafy sprays, central decoration in black with a medallion containing woman's head wearing hat with hair knotted at forehead, a small leafy tool on each side, fleurons above and below, leafy decorations in corners, spine with small trefoils in each compartment, edges stained blue. (Binding slightly rubbed at edges, stain on upper cover.)
