This finely carved figure with missing head depicts Shakyamuni Buddha in meditation with hands in dhyana mudra, seated on a cut grass mat situated at the vajrasana site in Bodh Gaya, eastern India, with Buddhas below seated between trees and Corinthian pilasters, with kneeling devotees at either side. Compare the grass mat and the Buddhas, devotees, and pilasters on the pedestal of a dhyana Buddha in W. Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture in the British Museum, London, 1996, Vol. II, fig. 31.
