This finely modelled and gilded copper figure of Garuda was likely part of the apex of a massive repoussé throne arch (torana), such as those examples recorded by Giuseppi Tucci at Sakya monastery while still intact in the first half of the twentieth century, see Tucci, Transhimalaya, Geneva, 1973, figs. 173, 174. The exquisite workmanship is typical of Newar craftsmen employed throughout Tibet and China in this period.
