Description

gouache and ink on paper, green, yellow and red rules on buff paper, one side with an illustration of a seated nobleman with a Brahmin performing a yagna to Agni (the God of Fire), 19 lines of text in black and red devanagari script, title in red, canto and chapter numbers in the left and right margins (canto 10, chapter 52), further numbered in right margin (Ram / 49), the other side with an illustration of Krishna in combat, 21 lines of text in black and red devanagari script

paintings: 9.5 by 10cm.; 11.3 by 12.5cm.

text panel: 15.7 by 32.3cm.

leaf: 23.7 by 40.9cm.

Krishna is depicted in combat with a young nobleman, most likely to be Rukma, the prince of the kingdom of Vidarbha. Rukma wanted his sister, Rukmani, to marry his friend Shishupala. A distressed Rukmani sent a message to Krishna asking him to rescue her while she visited a temple before the wedding ceremony. She is depicted here standing in a pavilion behind Krishna.
