Description

gouache heightened with gold on paper, inscribed with a minute line of gold devanagari script in the lower right corner 'tasvir bana priyuru karigar ki' (this painting is the work of the artist Priyuru?), verso bearing a later attribution 'Raja/ Sahasmal By Bhawani dass/ 1725', thin gold border, margins trimmed

22.2 by 29.2cm.

A young, unidentified, prince is depicted in the foreground on a beautifully caparisoned grey stallion holding a falcon in his gloved right hand. The prince could be Maharaja Ishvari Singh of Jaipur (r.1743-50). The later inscription on the reverse suggests that may be Prince Sahas Mal of Kishangarh. For a comparable painting depicting Sahas Mal in a landscape with the Kishangarh lake and a processional army in the distance, painted by Bhawani Das in circa 1725, see Haidar 2011, fig.9a, p.541.

The pavilion to the right side of the lake is similar to Jal Mahal, a palace in the Man Sagar lake between Jaipur and the old city of Amer. The procession beyond the lake with soldiers on foot, horsemen and elephants includes a few European figures in black hats. The striped flags being carried are very similar to the pacharanga (five colours) associated with the Maharajas of Amer and Jaipur.
