Signed Heian Shunsho saku (made by Heian Shunsho)
Edo - Meiji period, 19th century
the two-panel screen with patinated metal hinges, each panel comprised of upper and lower section, the black lacquer exterior frame decorated overall with sprinkled mother-of-pearl, fundame beveled edges, the upper section to the exterior decorated in gold, silver, red and black hiramaki-e, kimpun, and inlays of mother-of-pearl and gold leaf on a red lacquer ground with butterflies, the upper section to the interior decorated in coloured togidashi-e, depicting travellers scattering in heavy rain across the two panels after a woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) titled Shono: Driving Rain (Shono, hakuu), the exterior and interior lower sections in togidashi-e simulating wood burl (mokume), accompanied with a fitted box
