The subject of the present work depicts a fire in the New England Fair Building on Huntington Avenue in Boston that occurred on January 21, 1886. According to Kathleen Burnside, co-author of the Hassam catalogue raisonné, this work was originally titled Fire and Rainy Night but has since been exhibited under the titles Firelight, Boston and The Alarm.
