A Large George III Silver Two-Handed Cup and Cover, Maker's Mark I.C possibly for John Carter, London, 1776

The arms are those of Grenville with Nugent in pretence for George Nugent Grenville (1753-1813), son of the Rt. Hon. George Grenville, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Prime Minister (1763-65). George Nugent was M.P. for Bucks (1774-79). In 1779 he succeeded his uncle as Earl Temple, Viscount Cobham and Baron Cobham, Lord Lieutenant of Bucks. 1782 till his death, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1782-83, first Grandmaster of the Order of St. Patrick, P.C. 1782, Secretary of State December 1783. In 1784 he was created Marquess of Buckingham, K.G. 1786. In 1788 he succeeded his wife’s father as Earl Nugent He was again Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1787-89. His son Richard became Earl Temple of Stowe, co Buckingham in 1822, Marquess of Chandos and Duke of Buckingham.

The arms of the recipient are those of Rous for Sir John Rous, 5th Baronet, of Henham Hall, co. Suffolk, 1750-1827 M.P. for Suffolk 1780-96, created in 1796 Baron Rous of Dennington, co. Suffolk and further created in 1821 Viscount Dunwich and Earl of Stradbroke. His second son Admiral the Hon. Henry John Rous RN 1795-1877, continued and expanded on his father's interest in horse racing and became known as “The Dictator of the Turf” reforming the rules and inventing the weight-for-age scale still in use today.

The inscriptions read “The Gift of George Nugent Grenville esq”, around the Grenville arms and “Won at Aylesbury 1776 by Leander” around the Rous arms
