The presentation inscription reads: "The Gift of the British Inhabitants of Madras To Lieut. Genl. Sir Samuel Auchmuty K.G. for the Conquest of Java. 1811."

Samuel Auchmuty (1758-1822) was born in New York City; his father was Assistant Minister at Trinity Church, and his uncle a lawyer for the soldiers in the Boston Massacre. After fighting with the British during the American Revolution, he went to India, where he was on the staff of Lord Cornwallis and saw action against Tippoo Sahib. In 1803 he was knighted for his service in Egypt, including the capture of Alexandria, and took part in the Buenos Aires expedition of 1806-07. Now a Major-General, in 1810 he was appointed head of the Army of Madras, one of the presidencies of the East India Company. In 1811 he commanded the expedition to conquer Java, and on his return to England was named Lieutenant-General.
