Born in Carrara, Francesco Mariotti studied at the Accedemia di Belle Arti of Carrara from 1851. In 1864 he went to Paris, where he worked in the studio of Cordier until 1868. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1865 and 1866. Having returned to Carrara, he showed his works at international exhibitions, including in Vienna in 1873, Melbourne in 1882 and Liverpool in 1885. He later became a professor at the Carrara Academy.


Another version of this beautiful model of a young woman, or possibly the present marble, was sold at Sotheby's New York on 6 March 1996 (lot 112) and is illustrated in Panzetta, op. cit. (fig. 1138).
