Paul-Jean-Baptiste Gasq had a keen interest in sculpting classical and allegorical subjects, however he also created portraits in bust, medallion, bas relief and statuette form for affluent French families. Gasq was the winner of the first Prix de Rome in 1890, and became a member of the Institut de France in 1935. Renowned for the wonderful sense of movement in his works, Gasq encapsulates the energy of a passionate embrace between two lovers in The Kiss. Another version of this model was sold at Sotheby's London on 20 May 2015 as lot 138 for £100,000.
