Description

Collection of silver and enamel cigarette cases, circa 1915

Comprising: a small silver cigarette case, the lid decorated with enamel bluebells, inscribed 'Noël 1916', German assay mark for silver; a cigarette case decorated with horizontal lines and a geometric pattern, the push piece collet-set with a cabochon sapphire, maker's mark, German assay mark for silver; a cigarette case decorated with an engine turned pattern; and a cigarette case with wick and striker strip, the thumbpiece of foliate design, inscribed 'Wloclawek 1.XII.14.', Russian assay marks for silver.

The inscription Wloclawek 1.XII.14. probably refers to an event in Battle of Lodz during World War I that took place between 18 November and 6 December 1914. The Battle of Lodz had as its aim to prevent the Russian army from invading Prussian Silesia. The Russian army under the command of General von Rennenkampf set up camp near the Polish town of Wloclawek.
