René Fontayne’s artistic career got off the ground in the fertile period between the two World Wars. Born in Vergèze, in the Gard, in 1891, he graduated from the Ecole Municipale des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes in 1910. In 1912, he travelled to Paris, thanks to a national scholarship, to undertake further studies as a painter and decorative artist. 

Paradise, an allegorical landscape painted in 1923, is an exception among the works he produced in the 1920s, displaying a Symbolist spirit which presaged the decorative panels that he would produce at the beginning of the next decade (see lot 26).

La carrière artistique de René Fontayne prend son essor durant la période fertile de l'entre-deux-guerres. Né à Vergèze, dans le Gard, en 1891, il est diplômé de l'Ecole Municipale des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes en 1910, et en 1912, il se rend à Paris grâce à une bourse nationale pour approfondir son talent de peintre et d'artiste décorateur.

Le Paradis, paysage allégorique de 1923, fait figure d'exception dans sa production des années 1920 : dans un esprit symboliste, il laisse présager les panneaux décoratifs qu'il allait peindre au début de la décennie suivante (voir lot 26).
