As discussed in David Sanctuary Howard, New York and the China Trade, Frenchtown, 1984, p. 113, no. C67, this service was made for either John or Thomas Stagg, brothers and residents of Staten Island, recorded as builders and merchants in New York City from 1771 until at least 1810. A large portion of this service, including the present pair of platters, was sold at Sotheby’s in New York on November 18, 1976, the property of a Long Island Collector, with a note that the service had descended direct from the Stagg family.
