A suji-bachi [helmet with raised ridges]

Edo period, 17th century


the twenty-fout plate russet iron bowl with raised ridges, the frontal plates rivetted with three shinodare [ornamental strips], five-stage copper tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, plain russet iron mabisashi [peak], the small fukigaeshi [turnbacks] applied with blue felt and shakudo mon [crests], shakudo fukurin [ornamental border], four-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neck guard] with close-spaced lacing in blue braid, wild boar tusk maedate [forecrest]


The bowl to peak: 30.4 cm., 12 in.

The shikoro to peak: 38.5 cm., 15 in.
