A koboshi bachi [helmet with small standing rivets]

Edo period, 17th century


the sixty-two plate russet iron bowl of goshozan form, the small pointed rivets on each plate decreasing in size towards the apex, terminating in a five-stage tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, russet iron mabisashi [peak], the black lacquer fukigaeshi [turnbacks] applied with copper-gilt take ni suzume mon [sparrow and bamboo crests], four-tiered black lacquer itamono-jikoro [solid plate neck guard] with spaced lacing in orange braid, the gold lacquered wood maedate [forecrest] in the form of a stylised crescent moon


The bowl to peak: 29 cm., 11¼ in.

The shikoro to peak: 36 cm., 14 in.
