hoshi-bachi [helmet with standing rivets] 

Edo period, 17th - 18th century


the fourteen-plate russet iron bowl of with large, standing rivets, the four-stage tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, chased and engraved with chrysanthemums and scrolling foliage on a nanako ground, stenciled Dutch leather mabisashi [peak] and fukigaeshi [turnbacks] with copper-gilt fukurin [ornamental border], the turnbacks applied with copper-gilt katabamimon [wood sorrel crests], the black lacquer manju-jhikoro [rounded neck guard] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in dark blue braid, gilt metal maedate [forecrest] in the form of a stylised crescent moon 


The bowl to peak: 27.7 cm., 11 in. 

The shikoro to peak: 36.5 cm., 14½ in.
