oil on canvas

Framed: 96 by 127cm., 37¾ by 50in.

This view is from the heights of Üsküdar on the Asian side of the Bosphorus looking north-west towards the Old City. In the distance on the left can be seen the Hagia Sophia and the Beyazit Tower and on the opposite shore of the Golden Horn the Galata Tower. Prieur-Bardin, who came to Istanbul in the 1890s and remained until 1901, enjoyed great success there, with one-man shows at Gülmez Brothers, Maison Baker, Viskonti, and at the Stefano Nouveau Bazaar, as well as participating in a group show at the Hacopulo Arcade. His work did not go unnoticed by Sultan Abdülhamid II, who purchased one of his views of the harbour from the Bosphorus.
